One of our affiliate partners, The Cook’s Garden, sent us a promotion code to pass on to our customers.

Enter code FG1FREE at checkout, and get free shipping on all orders over $25. Offer ends August 2nd, 2011, so hurry.

When I got the offer in the mail, I went over to their website to see what they’ve got that I want.

For autumn/winter crops, I like Arugula (in English the name is “Rocket” but most people know it by its Italian name), Beets and in particular the Lutz Green Leaf which is hardy enough to overwinter in our part of the world, Kale, Leeks, M√Ęche (also known as “Corn Salad”), Mesclun (any of several mixtures of greens, typically rich in some of the spicier greens such as Arugula and Mustard, typical of southern France), and Radishes.

There are a lot of other things that will grow late in the year. Cabbage is good and the cool weather tends to reduce predation by cabbage butterfly larva.

Carrots can grow pretty cool too and some will overwinter. Cauliflower by the way usually needs to overwinter but this depends on variety. August is a good month to start Cauliflower in trays to plant out, to overwinter and bear in spring–April here.

Not all of these crops I mentioned are fully coldhardy. Radishes are not typically overwintered except the big types, however, they grow so fast that you can still get a crop in easily. What I like is growing them into cooling weather so they stay crisp and mild.

Leeks are typically extremely coldhardy, and they’re perfect for flavoring a hot pot of soup for a cold winter evening.

DON’T FORGET FALL-PLANTED GARLICS! They’ve got the hardnecks, which is what I prefer, and softnecks too. I prefer types with fewer, bigger cloves, because there’s no bothering with tiny inner cloves that are tedious to work with. I like a robust, full-flavored type like the Korean Red. That looks like it would be excellent for adding to fermented pickles. Tom prefers mild garlics. They’ve got both.

Here’s a link to the offer, and don’t forget to type in the promotion code to get free shipping. Be sure to check your order total to make sure you got the promo offer, and watch the date; it expires soon.
