2012 Tomatoes

These tomatoes are neither heirlooms nor commercial varieties. They are breeds that Tom Wagner has developed making strategic pollinations and selections. This is an immensely laborious process, but worth it to get premium tomato varieties. For this reason, seed packets typically only have about 15 seeds in them. These tomatoes are potential collector’s items. Just $5 a pack.

NEW LISTINGS APRIL 14TH, 2012

Bing Cherry Blue-blushed but overall burgundy; a bowl of them look like a bowl of bing cherries. Good flavor. Productive.

Blue Angel This blue cherry keeps well.  Indeterminate vines have early fruit.  Needs a bit of fine-tuning to intensify the blue colors. SOLD OUT

Blue Match Larger blue slicer, blue stem and leaves, blue might vary in intensity a bit. Greenhouse variety “Match” in its background. Might work well for blue-type for greenhouse production. SOLD OUT

Blue Pitts Pinkish cherry tomato with intense blue cap.

Blue Streak Very blue-skin, saladette-to-slicer size, occasional streaks of blue, vine color not stablized yet. SOLD OUT

Blue Tears Tiny cherry tomato, blue vine, variable amount of blue on the skin of the fruit. Red flesh. High Yielding. From Rob’s back yard.

Dancing with Smurfs Blue cherry. Lots of tomatoes, sparse foliage to allow sun to penetrate deeply. Should give better germination than last year’s crop.

Gold Keeper Little gold cherry with nice flavor and crunch. ¼ will segregate to fully ripen, ½ will be firm, and ¼ will be super-firm. Save the seeds from the firm. Will have good texture even through cool nights.

Grappler’s Quest Pink grape, indeterminate. All I wanted was a sweet red cherry from the most unlikely of parents; Schimmeig Creg, Sun Sugar, and Green Grape. I feel like I am in a grappling tournament, facing one opponent after another. But if somebody wants to grapple with me…the quest may end soon. Should segregate to have flavors of its ancestors.

Gru Vee Green cherry tomato, similar to Green Doctors and Verde Claro. Some early and late blight resistance.

Helsing Junction Blues Intense blue cherry type, one of the best I have, named for Helsing Junction Farm near Rochester, Washington, in the Chahalis River Valley. SOLD OUT

WOW these went fast. Maybe we can grow these out in bulk for next year.

Momognahela Epidote Red and pink cherry tomato, fairly sweet, combines wild tomato with Green Zebra though does not look much like Green Zebra. Good yielder. F5

Out of the Blue Red cherry tomato on a blue vine. Easy to see the fruit because o the contrast. Rob’s wife liked these.

Perfect Storm Salad-size globe-shaped yellow skin, yellow flesh fruit, fair amount of early and late blight resistance. Some resistance to cold nights.

Russian Cossack Black tomato with pink and green stripes. Semi-determinate. Similar to “Join or Die”.

Santa Ana Green/red/orange bicolor, green shoulders, pinkish-green bud end, great flavor, firmness. Holds well on vine.

Schrapnellmine Red cherry. Still segregating for late blight.

Shadow Boxing Pink-purple slicer with purple stripes. Blue Vine. Some late-blight resistance.

Sky Reacher Slicer, red flesh, red and yellow striped skin. Potential for late-blight resistance.

Treasure Trove Yellow cherry tomato similar to yellow pear but in a round shape. Not sour like many cherry tomatoes are. Tolerated hot days and cool nights in the southwest. Verticillium wilt resistance.

Wild Kingdom Small, grape-sized cherry, yellow flesh, quite attractive, shows striping before fully ripe. Indeterminate.

Betimes Macbeth My earliest tomato for several years now in the PNW. This is a novel tomato….a cherry sized processing tomato….very early, very red, and productive. It matures as early as 5 weeks after blooming. The vine is small…a prostrate determinate that is only inches high…good for ground culture or hanging baskets. Tolerates cold nights down in the upper 40′s with no loss of texture or flavor. I combined a numbered research processing tomato with a frost resistant tomato line to get a true breeding novelty.

Blue Fog A blue tomato crossed to San Francisco Fog. An early tomato with genes still bouncing around of levels of blue in the fruit.  Compact plant

Campari Nuovo An OP version of Campari …the one you find in the grocery stores in the clam shell plastic packages. This is a larger size …maybe 2 inches or larger in diameter. Hoping a few of you will find some good candidate vines for seed saving.

Golden Crabapple Large gold cherry/salad . Has Silvery Fir Tree in its pedigree. I like this one for looks, flavor, and yield.

Green Sleeves This is my version of the Green Sausage introduced by Sahin Zaden of the Netherlands. Long skinny green tomatoes with green stripes. A hanging basket type vine. Determinate.

Hornblende Salad size green fleshed tomato with good flavor. It is half Yellow Pear in its pedigree but is a deep oval fruit not pear shaped. limit

Matt’s Jollies Nice long grape …red in color. A combination of Matt’s Wild and Casadys Folly….no stripes

Muddy Waters Muddy black blue tomato with green flesh. Muddy blue stripes. Was one of my better candidates for The Searching for the Blue Zebra.

Queen Anne Named after the Queen Anne district of Seattle. This is a smaller version of Vintage Wine…pink and yellow stripes but not a potato leaf vine.

Soyuz Eleven Named after cosmonaut Volkov’s last space mission. This is a great black combining Black Prince and Volkov. Extremely smoky flavor Nice size fruit

New listings as of April 14th, 2012

Blue Bayou This is a really great tomato….It has very red flesh but is quite blue when the sun reaches the developing fruit.  The vines are very blue.  The 2 inch fruits average about 3 locules.  This is but one of my series of backcrosses of my emerging blue varieties back to the original OSU Blues and selfed out for a few generations to make sure the recessive and dominant genes will breed true.

Chocolate Blues A work in progress.  A brown/black fruited tomato with a fair amount of blue showing up on the shoulders of the fruits…It has stripes and those stripes are dramatic with the interplay of blue on chocolate.  The vine is determinate and productive

Gateway I have a member of the family who likes this one better than just about anything else I have.  My taste buds are different.  Salad size red that will segrgate for quite a few traits but you need to find the ones you want.  This one has a little of Brad Gates breeding lines in the pedigree.

Green Grape This is the strain of GREEN GRAPE that I started with back to 1977 when I found a single plant that had great fruit but virtually no seed til near frost when I found one fruit with two seed.  I introduced this variety first in my Tater Mater Seed Catalog back in 1983.  I called it a longer name back then…..Thompson Seedless Grape….because it was shaped like grapes and were virtually seed free….I had to select for a few more seed production but the ones released to the public have changed over the years to an inferior product.  The variety was renamed by the public as simply GREEN GRAPE..especially by growers near San Francisco and the tomato became famous at the Chze Panisse restaurant in Berkeley with Alice Waters.  This is the original breeding lines descended seed by seed for 35 years by the breeder.  Should be a collectors item if you are lucky enough to get a sample before I am out.

Green Zebra My Green Zebra was first released in 1983 with my Tater Mater Seeds catalog.  This is seed that has never been grown by anyone except myself since it came into being back 1972.  Four varieties selected and bred starting during the 1950′s went into several crosses, selections, and re-crossings since that time.  This would be called Breeder’s private stock seed since you would be getting it direct from the originator.

Magic Trick Let’s start with 100% late blight resistance. This one just happens to be the very best variety I have for combining all I need for blight resistance as to date.  The red fruits are one inch cherry size or a bit larger.  The vine is indeterminate and productive.  This vine happened to ripen without a plastic cover or greenhouse.  The plant was put outdoors late to test for the late blight that absolutely kills nearly every other tomato variety by November here in the PNW.

Skykomish A beautiful bicolor fruit of yellow/orange/red with a flavor out of this world..and near 100% late blight resistance.  One of my better creations…4 inch fruits of reveled colors

Verde Claro This is from my breeding work during the early 1990′s to make improvements on the Green Grape tomato which was first released in 1983…Tater Mater Seed catalog.  Verde Claro …meaning clear green has a clear epidermis unlike the Green Grape tomato which has a yellow epidermis.  VC is also sweeter thna Green Grape.  It gets sweeter as you leave it on the vine….once it bursts…it doesn’t get any sweeter.

Wooly Kate I have been looking for an excellent woolly tomato with super blue fruits…The flesh is red and size between bit about and below 2 inches in diameter.
